Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal of for funding to set up a X-ray powder diffraction facility within the Department of Chemistry that is capable of collecting high quality diffraction data on both powder samples and thin-films, at room temperature and below. This dual-purpose instrument will be used to apply the newly developed methods of structure solution from powder data to a range of key inorganic, organic and hybrid materials that have applications in the telecommunications and electronics industries, and thereby, allow their full molecular characterisation. It will also be used in glancing-angle mode to probe the structural changes of thin-films of inorganic materials generated by chemical vapour deposition techniques, these materials having applications as sensors and solar control coatings. The instrument will also be used to investigate the structures of and phase changes, with temperature, in a range of novel organic, organometallic and inorganic materials that are of current interest to the research groups within the Department.
