Computational modelling of engineering processes in the context of design for both manufacturing and performance, as well as its evaluation in service under extreme conditions (e.g. fire events) is a significant challenge. The Greenwich research programme in this area involves an inter-disciplinary group of engineers, computer scientists and applied mathematicians totalling 70+ staff, research fellows and post-graduate students and currently commanding ~ 3.5M of research support. The group's focus is upon techniques and tools that enable the hardest and most computationally intensive engineering problems to be effectively addressed on high performance parallel computing systems. Consequently this research programme, from the modelling of closely coupled interacting phenomena to the use of parallelisation techniques, strategies and tools, depends directly upon the provision of responsive HPPC compute resources. Existing parallel and throughput resources requires replacing to adequately support this programme, with its rapidly expanding mix of computational demands.
