Summary on Grant Application Form
The UK Coastal Research Facility (UKCRF) is a 57m by 27m coastal wave basin used for fundamental research into coastal processes, and supported by EPSRC. The UKCRF is a world-class facility in that it can generate waves in conjunction with a pumped longshore current. However, it lacks advanced instrumentation for unsteady flow measurement (as identified in the UKCRF Strategy Document: 1999-2004). It is therefore intended to upgrade a 2-D laser Doppler anemometer, and enable researchers using the UKCRF to obtain detailed measurements of unsteady water particle velocities and accelerations at an accuracy and sampling frequency sufficiently high for turbulent fluctuating components to be measured properly. Installation, calibration and operation of the upgraded 2-D Doppler anemometer will take place in the UKCRF, and be undertaken by EPSRC grand-holders and the Facility Manager, in consultation with the UKCRF User Group. The LDA will be used to investigate the detailed structure of wave-induced currents and undertow as well as turbulence parameters.
