Summary on Grant Application Form
A preliminary multi-disciplinary (experimental/modelling) study of the behaviour of cells on bioactive coatings will be undertaken in order to assess the dominant materials surface characteristics that allow attachment and growth to occur in well characterised systems and to develop predictive tools for studying the effectiveness of such surfaces (including coatings). Mathematical models will be developed to describe the behaviour of cells and their interaction with different kinds of coating, with complementary experiments (performed in parallel) guiding and validating the modelling. The project has a pump-priming role in establishing a cross-disciplinary team with the expertise to undertaken subsequent investigations of this important area at the life sciences-physical sciences interface.
