The design and study of anion receptors (anionophores) is still an underexplored area of chemistry. Such compounds should be useful in sensors (for example, for environmental contaminants such as nitrate), and could slow novel biological and catalytic properties. Recently we have shown that neutral lipophilic anionophores of exceptional power can be made from inexpensive steroid cholic acid. We now plan to extend our designs, adding units which should increase potency still further, and should also allow control of selectivity. In the course of this research, we hope to demonstrate that our compounds can carry anions such as chloride across cell membranes, and perhaps that they can show useful biological activity. In particular, the work is relevant to cystic fibrosis, which is caused by a faulty chloride transport system. We will also investigate the dissolution of inorganic salts by anionophores in non-polar solvents, perhaps resulting in naked cations free to partake in phase transfer catalysis . In parallel, we will address some issues of general importance to anion recognition, especially the validation and extension of a new method for measuring very high binding constants as shown by our receptors.
