The theory of predictive control is to be extended for difficult industrial systems which might be represented by non-linear or distributed models. Four of the leading US University groups are to co-operate on different aspects of the research programme. Professor Tomizuka at Berkeley will co-operate on state space predictive control for large systems and Professor Seborg at Santa Barbara will work with the centre on non-linear predictive control. Optimisation algorithms will be progressed with Professor Bernstein at Michigan and work on distributed systems will proceed with Professor Benstman at Illinois.The project will involve a schedule of visits, two per annum for reporting and workshops, and will encourage longer research visits for younger researchers to gain international experience. The results of the project are to be disseminated through an EPSRC Marine Network, the Advanced Control Technology Club and publications. The value of the theoretical techniques will be assessed on full non-linear simulations of real industrial processes, that are available in the Centre. The ACT Club are providing resources for industrial case studies with UK companies and two US based process companies are to describe their experience in using commercial supervisory systems and discuss suitable applications.
