Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme will bring together the world-class expertise in quantum mechanical computational descriptions of semiconductor heterostructure devices and global electromagnetic systems solutions, both present at the Institute of Microwaves and Photonics at the University of Leeds, to produce a state-of-the-art ability in all-encompassing semiconductor device modelling. This new paradigm will be utilised to support two complementary experimental programmes in quantum cascade laser fabrication. The combination of leading theoretical modelling with the forefront technology being developed in the Department of Physics at the University of Sheffield will represent the strongest team in this field. In addition, the co-operation with the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universitat in Frankfurt will enable the UK to gain a grounding, and establish a route for technology transfer, in the more long term area of combining quantum cascade lasers with advanced antennae for surface emitting sources.
