Summary on Grant Application Form
The application aims to enable Prof K Hanjalic, a distinguished turbulence modelling specialist from the University of Delft, to collaborate with the applicant's group for a period of 3 months on the predictive properties of low-Re turbulence transport models for unsteady boundary layers and, ultimately, on their suitability as near-wall models in a hybrid LES/RANS strategy. In the initial part of the programme, selected models will be investigated in boundary layers subjected to periodic forcing at various frequencies which are relatively low in comparison with the turbulence time scale. Models up to and including second-moment closure will be investigated. In the second part, most of which will extend well beyond the Fellowship period, selected models will be incorporated into an existing LES method and applied to channel flow at Reynolds numbers of 5000 and 10000, to identify which variant returns the best mean-flow and turbulence characteristics across both the RANS and LES domains and how best to couple the two domains. The ultimate objective, to be pursued subsequent to the Fellowship, is to allow a satisfactory representation of separation from smooth surfaces at high Reynolds numbers.
