Summary on Grant Application Form
The focus of this project is the resolution of near-wall processes in LES for separated flow at high Reynolds numbers. This is one of the most challenging issues in LES, because the semi-viscous sub-layer is very thin at high Re numbers and the influential turbulent scales at the wall are very small. Thus, the near-0wall mesh resolution required, subject to known grid-quality demands posed by LES, is economically untenable at high Reynolds numbers. The project will examine hybrid methods which interface LES in the outer region with RANS transport models of turbulence near the wall. Initial studies of model candidates will be undertaken by reference to data for boundary layers subjected to harmonic forcing, to investigate model performance for unsteady conditions. Selected models will then be incorporated into an LES methodology, using different interfacing strategies and examined first by reference to channel flow then, if judged appropriate, more complex separated and skewed shear layers at low Reynolds numbers for which DNA data exist. The principal testing ground will be massively separated flows behind single and periodic, nominally 2D hills for which either highly-resolved LES or experimental data are available.
