Neutron diffraction provides the most incisive probe of the microscopic behaviour of a wide range of magnetic materials, and since the earliest use of this technique, applied magnetic fields have provided an invaluable accessory in manipulating and unravelling complex magnetic correlations. We propose to enhance the capability of the ISIS facility to study magnetic materials thought the provision of a 10 Tesla cryomagnet, designed specifically to impose the weakest possible stray fields on the instruments' detectors. We also outline key problems in pure and applied magnetism that may be tackled with this combination of equipment. Our principle objectives are as follows.* To develop at ISIS an optimised facility for pulsed neutron diffraction from samples in an applied magnetic field, and maintain the UK's leading position in the development of neutron scattering techniques at a pulsed source.* To explore key problems in the magnetism of strongly correlated electronic materials, including colossal magnetoresistance, superconductivity, frustration, variable valence and quadruploar ordering.* To underpin fundamental research on new magnetic materials, including nanostructured and molecular systems and amorphous magnetic materials.
