Conjugated polymers exhibit a rich variety of physical phenomena. These include, exotic low energy excitations resulting from the inter-play between electron-electron correlations and electron-lattice coupling; and electroluminescence and non-linear optical properties, making them candidates for light emitting displays and optical switching. They also play a key role in biological processes, for example light harvesting complexes and photosynthesis.The purpose of this application is for a workstation for the PI and two EPSRC funded students to perform a number of calculations to better understand the excited states of conjugated polymers. We will solve realistic models of pi-conjugated systems using the highly accurate density matrix renormalisation group method. This combination of a realistic semi-empirical model and an accurate computational technique means that we are now able to perform numerical experiments which both truly reflect the electronic energies of real systems, and help us to explore the competing processes with determine these energies. This understanding is intended to guide the strong British opto-electronic and photonics experimental groups in material design and optimisation.
