Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme aims to develop new functionally gradient coatings for use on turbine blades and vanes within industrial turbines, as part of advanced power generation systems. In recent collaborations between Cranfield University and the University of Birmingham, a new type of chemically-graded overlay coating has been developed, that has the capability of responding to local temperature and environment to form either a chromia or alumina layer, as appropriate. This coating, named SMARTCOAT has superior hot corrosion resistance, whilst maintaining good oxidation behaviour. These initial coatings were produced by a combination of plasma spraying and CVD but were or relatively low density and rough surfaced impling scope for optimisation. A first objective of this proposal is to extend this coating concept to production routes such as electroplating/CVD and PVD/CVD in order to improve coating quality, and there will be substantial industrial contribution to this phase from Praxair ad Diffusion Alloys. The main theme of the proposal is to test and model the behaviour of the new coatings under conditions of hot corrosion and oxidation. Important aspects will be the development of quantitative models of section loss and the spallation of protective scales during oxidation. The test evaluation will be undertaken at both universities and also at Alstom Power and the National Physics Laboratory.
