Summary on Grant Application Form
Zeolites are an important class of porous inorganic materials with a wide range of applications in separation processes, ion-exchange and catalysis. Although a large number of synthetic routes are available, the ability to fabricate these materials into higher-order architectures, such as monoliths and thin films has been by comparison overlooked by materials chemists. The central theme of the proposed work is to develop new template based methods for the fabrication of zeolite and zeolite-related materials with controlled architecture at the microscopic and macroscale. We will achieve this by using sacrificial macro-templates, such as polyelectrolyte shells, latex beads, polymer gels, lyotropic liquid crystals and biopolymer sponges, that are patterned on commensurate length scales. These organic materials will be used to pattern the aggregation and compaction of preformed zeolite (silicalite) nanoparticles, which will serve as the basic building block for the higher-order structures. By removing the organic macro-templates after construction we will prepare hierarchically ordered pre structures with nanoscale (zeolite unit cell), mesoscale (interstices/grain boundaries) and macroscale (inorganic replica) organisation.
