Summary on Grant Application Form
This programme will involve three main aspects-mechanical testing, crystallographic characterisation and development and validation of anisotropic rate dependent constitutive models. Creep tests will be carried out on notched specimens in uniaxial tension and on tubular specimens subject to combined tension/torsion. The tested specimens will be examined in detail using electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD). This will provide, for the first time, an insight into the heterogeneity of deformation in multiaxial loads. Most tests will be on well-oriented, defect free single crystals; however, specimens with deviations from symmetric orientations and with deliberately engineered defects will also be considered. The information from these studies will be used to calibrate and validate existing slip system-based constitutive models to predict creep deformation. One of the models will be extended using discrete dislocation dynamics approaches, to include the individual contributions of edge and screw dislocations to the evolution of the flow stress. The work will lead to improved constitutive models for predicting creep deformation and failure under multiaxial loading conditions.
