|
The research programme comprises: (1) The design and manufacture of novel heamoadsorbents based on uncoated polymer pyrolised activated carbons. (2) The development of prototype extracorporeal devices for removal of uraemic toxins from the circulation of patients with renal and multi-organ failure. (3) Medical grade activated carbons will be evaluated during in vitro studies to demonstrate the effective removal of low and middle molecular weight uraemic toxins from blood. (4) Haemo/biocompatibility of the adsorbents in order to prevent the formation of microemboli will be investigated. (5) Regeneration of spent adsorption columns will be studied to evaluate the potential for repetitive use. (6) A preliminary cost-benefit analysis will be performed of the extracorporeal adsorption technique for the treatment of patients with acute and chronic renal failure.
