The following clean-up method is to be investigated: Groundwater is cleaned up by a photocatalytic reaction carried out underground in a reaction vessel, located in a borehole. Light is delivered using fibre-optics or light pipe. The catalyst is a novel silica-based titanium modified mesoporous material. The light source typically would be an ultra-violet lamp, but there is also the possibility of using solar energy, in which case power requirements would be very low, or zero. The two target compounds would be a chlorophenol, and MTBE. Based on the literature, it should be possible to obtain complete removal of the chlorophenols into chloride and carbon dioxide, and MTBE into carbon dioxide and acetic acid. It could in principle be extended to other organics.
