Vanadium oxide films are unique in that they have near room temperature phase transitions which potentially may be exploited in applications such as thermochromic windows. Such films prepared by traditional PVD methods are very limited in terms of their optical selectivity. As such we will investigate the growth and characterisation of vanadium oxide, and metal-doped vanadium oxide films by APCVD, which will result in advantages in terms of durability, structural control and doping and the potential for improved optical selectivity and control of transition temperature. The approach will involve the in-situ study and optimisation of the CVD processes, the full characterisation of deposited films and an investigation of the relationship between microstructure, composition and switching temperature. These data will be employed in the modelling of the performance of the films in thermochromic applications.
