The Cranfield Department of Enterprise Integration and the National CIMS Engineering Research Centre in Tsinghua University has a long established relationship in the area of Computer Integrated Manufacturing. Cranfield has been developing work in the Knowledge Based Engineering area and authored the DTI supported 'A Best Practice Guide to Achieving Competitive Advantage through Knowledge-Based Engineering'. There has been two working visits with Chinese colleagues coming to the UK to develop the common interest area in KBE. A technical development plan has been agreed in October 1999 (see Case for Support).A timing opportunity arises in June 2000 when the Chinese team is initiating their industrial activities including visits to Haier, a leading mould maker in Qingdao, China and the Cranfield team has a paper accepted in the AMSMA conference in Guangzhou. The proposal research travel and subsistence funding for Dr Fan, the investigator and Dr Guihua Li, who until recently work with Dr Fan on the Cranfield KBE activities to travel to China to work with colleagues in Tshinghua and present at the AMSMA conference.Funding is sought to make use of this collaboration opportunity which will be further developed into a full proposal for the EPSRC International Collaboration call.
