The overall aim of the project is to contribute to establishing an engineering basis for flight simulation fidelity and its assessment.A novel adaptive pilot model (APM) structure will be fitted to data from flight test (DERA Lynx aircraft), the DERA Advanced Flight Simulator and the University's new flight simulator to establish a baseline level of fidelity. The APM represents the pilot-aircraft closed-loop system as a variable parameter low order, equivalent system, with parameters reflecting pilot control strategy and workload components, eg gain and lead-time. Key simulation fidelity parameters, within the motion and visual cueing systems, will be varied in a piloted trial to develop an understanding of the sensitivity of the APM parameters to fidelity.The experimental work will be based on the new Flight Simulator at the University of Liverpool, featuring the high-fidelity FLIGHTLAB modelling environment. The results from the trials will be used to develop new simulation fidelity criteria based on the equivalence of pilot control strategy in the simulation compared with flight. The principal application will be helicopter simulation, although some read-across of the results to fixed-wing aircraft will be conducted.
