Summary on Grant Application Form
The work described in this proposal is aimed towards the total synthesis of four of the stemona alkaloids; Stemoamide, Stemoninoamide, Tuberostemospionine and Tuberostemonine L-G. This will be achieved using a unified strategy based on our recently uncovered [5+2] photocycloadditon reaction of maleimides to construct the perhydroazaazulene skeleton common to all four alkaloids. The photocycloaddition using chirally modified maleimide derivatives will also be investigated, which may allow asymmetric synthesis of some of these alkaloids to be achieved.
