Conventional magnetic resonance imaging produces high resolution images of the human body, but is not suitable for imaging rigid solids, due to their very short T2 relaxation times. A number of techniques exist to image solids by NMR, however there remains a need for a technique which: (a) can produce images of materials with ultra-short T2 values (<10s) in a reasonable length of time, (b) is not restricted to very small samples, and (c) retains the sample's T2 information in order to provide contrast. We have developed continuous-wave magnetic resonance imaging (CW-MRI), and have performed pilot experiments which show that it can image ultra-short T2 materials. In the proposed project we wish to develop the technique so that we can produce one-, two- or three-dimensional images of solid samples up to ~7cm in diameter. We will develop an optimised design for the hardware and software to enable the images to be collected and processed automatically. Different ways of manipulating the contrast in CW-NMR images will be investigated, in order to obtain useful physical and/or chemical information about the sample. In parallel with the technique development work we will apply the imaging method to various materials, including cements, bio-materials and rock core-samples.
