Summary on Grant Application Form
I propose to establish a surface-forces laboratory, and to study the properties of polyelectrolytes attached to surfaces immersed in aqueous electrolytes, especially their equilibrium structure and their response to shear and compression. Using an ultra-sensitive surface force balance (SFB) we shall measure directly at the nanometer level, and over a wide range of parameters, the friction between charged and between polyelectrolyte-bearing surfaces, and the dynamic response of the chains to deformation and shear. Our results are expected to have implications for macroscopic properties such as colloidal stabilisation and shear rheology, friction and wear, and for biolubrication.
