The purpose of the proposed work is to design, construct, evaluate and apply an advanced optical flame sensor for measurement of temporal variation of flame location and local equivalence ratio in gas turbine combustors at laboratory and full-scale installation. The novel flame sensor will be based on spatially precise measurements of chemiluminescence intensity from excited CH, OH and C2 radicals in the reaction zone. Such measurements of local flame location and degree of fuel premixedness can provide guidance for optimum flame placement away from regions of high strain and low mixing with hot gas products in fuel-lean gas turbine combustors for reduced Nox emissions and controlled exhaust gas temperature for improved reliability and availability. An additional benefit from the novel flame sensor is its potential application for active control of combustion induced oscillations. The project is a partnership between Imperial College and two UK gas turbine manufacturers. The resulting instrument will have application to all industries and universities with an interest in combustion and its use is not limited to industrial gas turbines.
