Summary on Grant Application Form
Processing of biological macromolecules has assumed significant importance in the biotechnological industry, which now realises the importance of downstream processing in a production process. Macromolecular fractionation using ultrafiltration is strongly influenced by operating and physiocochemical parameters and these processes need to be very precisely fine-tuned to achieve satisfactory levels of fractionation. The results of fine-tuning for macromolecular fractionation are difficult to translate into practice when using conventional modes of ultrafiltration and hence new modes of operation needed to be developed. In this project a novel mode of operation for ultrafiltration processes, this being termed Carrier Phase Ultrafiltration (CPUF) will be investigated in details. CPUF is expected to facilitate high-resolution fractionation of high value biological macromolecules at optimised conditions. The carrier phase provides the optimised physiocochemical environment and the process can be operated at constant permeate flux and constant mass transfer coefficient.
