Summary on Grant Application Form
A series of pressure vessel and weld steels for nuclear applications will be subjected to a systematic programme of neutron irradiations. These will be examined by a variety of analytical electron microscopy and mechanical testing techniques. The information obtained will be used to validate a variety of neutron irradiaton-induced and thermally-induced impurity intergranular segregation models. The project naturally fits into the materials research issues theme, concerning itself with materials property degradation due to neutron irradiation and the resulting environmental impact that will ensue if reactor pressure vessel embrittlement is reduced. The project will enable designers to more confidently make life enhancement predictions and improve design of components in the pressure vessel will result, particularly in the regions of welds.
