The proposal addresses the construction of adaptive diode-pumped c.w. laser resonator geometries that can generate diffraction-limited, ideally single longitudinal mode output of power levels in the range 10W-100W. The technique uses gain-grating 'holography' to compensate for distortions caused by thermally-induced lensing in bulk laser media, and the high-order modal propagation characteristics of multimode optical fibres using a double-pass ring geometry. The work described is a joint proposal between Imperial College and Southampton University, and will use bulk Nd:doped crystal media and highly multimode Nd and Yb doped silica fibre amplifiers. Company involvement (Spectron Laser Systems, Rugby, UK) is an integral part of the proposal through supply of diode-pumped amplifier modules, a CASE studentship and final product development once useful high powers in the 10W-100W range have been obtained. Development of bulk fibre resonators, together with modelling, numerical simulation and fibre modal analysis will be the subject of the first year's work. Year two will be devoted to optimisation of these separate resonator systems, with construction of a hybrid geometry if applicable. Product development will also be conducted in collaboration with Spectron Laser Systems.
