Summary on Grant Application Form
A set of molecules, of the generic structure (bpy)(CO)3Re(dye-azacrown), will be studied to determined their effectiveness as light-controlled ion switches. Three classes of dye are proposed for study; amido, styryl, and azo. A detailed understanding of the mechanisms by which photon absorption can result in the sustained release of a guest ion from the azacrown will be developed through a combination of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques which report on structure, bonding, and dynamics.
