The project will involve the synthesis and characterisation of oxides having one dimensional crystal structures. The samples will be characterized by X-ray powder diffraction at room temperature and at high temperature. The latter will enable us to follow structural changes during synthesis. Neutron diffraction is invaluable in defining the crystal structures of oxides of heavy metals, and will be used when appropriate. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy will be used to characterize the incommensurate phases which we expect to form. Magnetometry and conductivity measurements will allow us to correlate the observed structural features with the behaviour of the material.
