Molecular magnetism is being investigated intensively in a search for novel magnetic materials and phenomena. However, many fundamental questions relating to smaller magnetic clusters as yet remain unanswered. In this work we will probe the magnetic fine structure of trinuclear d-transition metal compounds, the well-known 'basic metal carboxylates', via EPR spectroscopy, including state-of-the-art high frequency techniques. EPR is a much more sensitive probe of electronic structure than traditional bulk magnetic techniques, but remains unexploited for these simple systems. This study will advance our knowledge of how magnetic properties of materials such as the 'single-molecule magnets' are controlled. The information gained may guide the future synthesis of novel magnetic materials, and thus, in the long term, be of benefit to the magnetic data recording industry. The combination of fundamental science, an excellent training in molecular magnetic materials for a PG student, and potential future applications are thus in keeping with the EPSRC's mission.
