Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will prove the concept of some novel, highly integrated active antenna modulator configurations. Efficient, linear generation of non-constant envelope signals, required for future bandwidth efficient modulation schemes, will be achieved within active antenna structures. Printed antennas will also serve as power combiners, with carefully tailored common mode and differential mode impedances, ensuring maximum power efficiency. This will be a significant advance on current LINC and CALLUM systems, where the circuit level power combiner losses degrade overall efficiency. Software control of transmitted phase is readily achieved in such modules, facilitating their use as elements in future SDMA smart antennas.
