Summary on Grant Application Form
This project combines the experience of the investigators of delivering stimulating maths and science workshops to young people, with the expertise of a professional video company and a very widely avail' on-line mathematics magazine. It aims to develop a series of workshops for young people on four carefully chosen topics which (i) demonstrate fundamental ideas (ii) have great potential for development (iii) show how maths and science relate to society and (iv) have immediate visual appeal. The workshops will be a mix of presentation and hands on investigations. They will aim to bring the excitement fun and challenge of. mathematics and science home to a carefully targetted audience in a 'disadvantaged' educational area identified through the Excellence in the Cities programme. The workshops with the young people will be profesionally filmed and four short videos aimed at a young audience will produced for distribution. An edited version of the videos will be placed on the Internet with full supporting notes and challenging questions. The web-site will be linked to the highly successful NRICH mathematics magazine which will allow it to reach a huge audience of young people any one else interested).
