The use of light to transmit, store and retrieve information is the key scientific concept behind the evolution of a global internet, advanced media storage technologies such as Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) and many modern sensing and imaging systems used in pollution monitoring and medical diagnostics. This project will convey the excitement of this Photonics revolution to school children at key stage 4 of the National Curriculum. Hands-on demonstration modules will be built to explain the basic scientific principles upon which this technology is based. Visual displays and computer based learning material will be used to supplement the exhibits and provide a greater depth of information. The modules will be designed for mobile exhibitions and will be used in schools and at a number of events across Wales to ensure wide interaction both the general public and school children.
