Summary on Grant Application Form
A mobile air monitoring laboratory, looking at compounds relevant to photochemical smog, will be used demonstrate to sixth form students some applications of their studies. The focus of the experiments will be to examine the close links between nitric oxides and ozone and to highlight the links with other topics in chemistry (e.g. organic compounds) or in other scientific fields (e.g. meteorology or transport studies).Following the delivery of introductory material, the mobile laboratory will be brought to a school. Students will have the opportunity to see data being taken on experiments that they have helped to design. Results will be evaluated and interpreted on the day and there will be follow-up packs involving spread-sheet and web based activities to reinforce the material. The initial part of the project will concentrate on the development of suitable 'fool-proof' experiments based on our current research activity and the design and production of introductory and follow-up material. Collaborations with a number of teachers and links with A level syllabus designers will ensure that this material is relevant and delivered at the right level. The second part of the project will be the delivery of a number of workshops.
