The aim is to study dynamic switching processes in recording media in the very high frequency regime. Micro magnetic modelling will be used to study the dynamics of switching behaviour in realistic situations, including pulse fields, rotating fields, head fields and full recording simulations. The influence of media defects such as 'low coercivity' grains upon switching dynamics will be studied. It is known that defects nucleate both thermal and demagnetising field driven reversal and it is expected that these will also be important in determining dynamic switching behaviour. Similarly the roles of grain size distribution and texture-induced orientation will be established. Particular attention will be paid to the dynamic behaviour of track edges, which have been shown by a Manchester group to have switching characteristics that are fundamentally different to on-track recording and which have not been previously been understood. The track edge erasure and noise processes are critical in determining the ultimate areal density of a system and will be increasingly important as track widths reduce. Major model developments will be undertaken to incorporate the effects of soft magnetic under layers and of eddy currents, both of which will have a significant effects upon the predicted switching performance of media.
