Summary on Grant Application Form
Funding for the HUC2k symposium is sought to enable the event to attract high-quality internationally leading participants, both speakers and delegates, to the event. In the early stages of a conference/symposium series (HUC2001) will be held at the Georgia Institute of Technology) it is crucial to ensure that the symposium has sufficient resources at its disposal to keep delegate fees to a reasonable market level, to have resources to fund visiting researchers from overseas and to allow subsidies to be created for researchers training in the community. To this end, funding from EPSRC will be used to:1. contribute to the development of an 'active badge' for delegates which exemplifies the symposium themes of ubiquity, portability and networking; this will be used both as a research tool during the event, and as a technology which can be used to explain to the press the focus of the symposium;2. contribute to the costs of attracting international keynote speakers;3. contribute to subsidised rates for researchers at PhD level to attend the symposium without hardship.
