The work described in this proposal is a programme to synthesise, characterise and utilise two sets of zeotype inorganic-organic hybrid materials: mircoporous metal phosphonates and organosilantriolates. The high utility of these materials stems from the incorporation of the organic element into the materials. The organic element makes them extremely versatile for a whole series of industrial applications, increases their hydrophobicity allowing for the development of more efficient and eco-friendly catalytic processes and can be controlled to product specific pore sizes for designer shape selectivity. The first class of new mircoporous materials to be synthesised are metal phosphonates using conditions and routes that have not been, or only sparingly, applied previously, with particular emphasis on using the HF/pyridine system. The second type of material that will be produced are metal silantriolates, a family of compounds whose chemistry has not been investigated, but which has great potential. The full gamet of synthetic techniques used to produce microporous compounds will be applied to producing this class of materials. All new materials will be fully characterised to obtain precise structures using diffraction and other techniques. Where possible the materials properties will be studied and the materials themselves modified to test for certain applications.
