Summary on Grant Application Form
The specific power output and level of efficiency of gas turbine engines improves with increased turbine entry temperatures. In the modern engine, film cooling is employed to safeguard engine components to work at gas temperatures, which exceed the metallurgical limit of materials. Experimental validation of cooling designs remains essential. This research program is to develop accurate scaling of results on engine components taken at reduced temperature and pressure but at the engine Reynolds number and Mach number to engine conditions. Little if any work of this overall testing has been undertaken to the author's knowledge. A low temperature gas turbine engine component section rig will be built and steady and transient heat transfer to the engine parts film-cooled components will be measured. The results will be checked against engine test data to validate the scaling rules. Also low cycle fatigue thermal stress of the components will be studied. It is anticipated this programme will generate a fast, economical and more scientific based test methodology and test facility for the gas turbine industry, which will enable the design of film cooled components to be examined at an early stage in the engine development.
