The goal of the project is to produce embedded Nano-cluster assemblies with a saturation magnetisation greater than 2.45T, the main vale observed in transition metal compounds, this will be achieved by a co-ordinated programme of complementary measurements using an improve cluster source. In situ XMCD experiments at the ESRF will measure the fundamental spin and orbital magnetic movements in mass selected Fe-clusters in non-magnetic and magnetic matrices. The atomic structure and morphology of the clusters will be determined by in situ TEM observations at Cambridge. The film structure and atomic moments will be correlated with a global film properties determined by magnetometry measurements at Leicester and interpreted using theoretical models developed by our collaborators. The information will be used to develop a prescription for optimising the saturation magnetisation in cluster-assembled films. If successful, commercial read/write head wafer produced by Seagate technology will be installed in Leicester deposition chamber and a high-U film will be deposited onto a region of the wafer at the correct point in the processing cycle. The wafer will be returned to Seagate to complete the processing and test the heads from the active region in commercial hard disc drives.
