Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to design and test novel access optics for an advanced portable video communicator device that has been the subject of collaboration between Cambridge University Engineering Department (Professor W Crossland) and Edith Cowan University, Western Australia (Professor Kamran Eshraghian) for several years. The device is a novel miniature active backplane liquid crystal display. Electronics are integrated into the backplane for forward and reverse wavelet transformation and sub-band decomposition and compression. The same pixels are used to read and write images, so the optics are highly novel. The chip design is extremely ambitious (requiring 0.18micron CMOS and greater than 10 gates). However, layouts of the first designs are nearing completion, and the current project aims to pursue the novel bi-directional access optics.
