The aim is to develop a novel computational tool for problems of immediate importance which involve fluid-structure interaction (FSI) in flexible vessels including: 1) biological flows, in particular the arterial and pulmonary system; 2) pressure surge in pipelines; 3) impact of fluid filled containers. We already have the nucleus of a general purpose numerical tool which has been applied in some of these areas. However, the method required fundamental development work and experimental validation to produce a reliable and robust analysis tool for FSI.We first propose a phase of experimental work to characterise fluid transients in flexible vessels of ranging flexibility and size. The experiments will focus on measuring wall velocities during pressure wave propogation using laser Doppler velocimetry. The second phase of the project involved assessment of our current model for FSI using simple assumptions through validation against simple analytical cases. The FSI analysis will then be extended to incorporate more complex material models, deformation theory and to incorporate increasingly more realistic boundary conditions measures during the experimental work. The final phase of the project will compare the simple and extended FSI models with the measured experimental data.
