A series of samples will be grown by molecular beam epitaxy confining delta doped layers of Beryllium acceptors in single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells, some wells will incorporate alloy spikes so as to manipulate the ordering of the atomic-like acceptor states. These samples will be designed a part of the theoretical programme at the Uni. Of Leeds. The results will then be compared to the observed ordering from Infra-red and Raman scattering experiments at UMIST. When satisfied that the statistics of the system can be predicted theoretically and observed experimentally, the programme will move on to investigate the carrier dynamics. This will be achieved by the advancement of the theoretical understanding in association with detailed experimental measurements of the excited state lifetime using the FELIX free-electron laser facility. The experimental programme will culminate with measurements illustrating the control of both the transitional energy and the excited state lifetime with the use of quantum well potential and an additional potential spike. The theoretical programme will extend this work further to consider manipulation of the ground state ionisation lifetime using a double quantum well potential, with the aim of engineering a population inversion for future far-infrared lasing applications.
