This research proposal is directed towards the understanding and modelling of the energy dissipation mechanisms that occur when particles undergo semi-solid, fluid and gas states in a finite volume as a result of external vibration. Because particle damping devices can employ ceramic or metallic particles they can operate at cryogenic or high (>1000(C) temperatures, well in excess of traditional damping materials. Particle damping devices are extremely nonlinear due to the phenomenological behaviour (states) of the particles under vibratory motion and no damping prediction models exist for these unusual states. The research planned in this project will deliver models that should lead to the use of these novel devices in numerical design codes such as Finite Elements and in a range of engineering applications.
