Innovative synthetic methodlogies for the controlled assembly and functionalisation of polyoxometalates will be developed in this research studentship. The scope of non-aqueous hydrolytic and reductive aggregation strategies will be explored and surface-derivatised species will be prepared for systematic reactivity studies, thus providing unpredented opportunities for structural and functional manipulation of these nanoscale molecular metal oxides. The hydrolytic synthesies and reactivities of a range of hexametalates [(X) M'M5018]n-, including alkylidyne and alkyl species, will be investigated. Heterometals will include transition and main group metals and their redox properties will be of particular interest. The construction of large polyoxometalates from Keggin building blocks by reductive aggregatin will be xplored and, if successful, this methodology could provide access to giant reduced polyoxometalate structures. By developing ways to control structure and function, this work wil have a major impact not only on the fundamental chemistry and polyoxometalates, including their catalytic properties, but also on ways in which nanoscale oxides are incorporated into thin films and ordered liquid phase materials.
