Our group has a good track record in the field of catalytic nitrene-transfer reactions; we developed both the first catalytic nitrene-transfer aziridination procedure to use a commercially available nitrene source, chloramine-T, and the first asymmetric sulfimidation procedure. We now propose to extend our programme to catalytic nitrene-transfer amination of C-H bonds using chloramine-T.Direct animation of C-H bonds is synthetically challenging. We aim to develop the first general synthetic method for the amination of C-H bonds using commercially available maganese (III) and copper (I) catalysts.The amination process creates a new chiral centre. We plan to control this by using chiral ligands for the maganese and copper catalysts, with the aim of achieving the first highly enantioselective amination process. Various mechanisms fgor the amination process can be envisaged and the operation of a particular mechanism may be a requirement for good enantioselectivity. A rigorous mechanistic study is thus proposed, which will underpin the search for enantioselective catalysts.
