The aim of this proposal is to investigate passively mode-locked optically-pumped semiconductor lasers as novel sources of ultra-short pulses at high average power and GHz repetition rates.The broad gain bandwidth of quantum well lasers is attractive for short pulse generation, however electrically-pumped devices suffer severe constraints on output power (~20 mW) and beam quality. A vertical-external-cavity quantum well laser can be pumped optically by a high power diode bar laser to generate average posers of 1 W or more, with output in a circular, near diffraction limited beam.I propose to investigate the performance of such a laser when passively mode locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. The intention is to make the first study of pulse formation in this novel type of laser system, and generate broad band chirped pulses which can be externally compressed by a large ratio. This represents the first step towards the design of smart mode-locked laser gain media with pulse generation and shaping functions integrated into a single semiconductor multilayer.
