Summary on Grant Application Form
A number of significant applications of high current conductors based on HTS materials have already been identified, and demonstrators constructed. However, for these applications to become economically viable, performance must be improved significantly and costs reduced.Professor Larbalestiers visit will be used to explore new approaches to conductor processing which look to enhanced performance beyond the fine-tuning of present routes.Applications which could then become widespread include:Power transmission cables, particularly for retrofitting in urban areas.Power distribution transformers, particularly where the fire-risk or weight of conventional transformers is an issue, eg within large buildings or for railway locomotives.
