This project will improve understanding of structural development throughout the sol-gel process and the attributes of the materials thereby produced. The comprehensive methodology proposed here will combine advanced X-ray, neutron, NMR and computer modelling techniques to understand the structure-synthesis-properties relations. The range of techniques used will include novel leading-edge experiments on isotope-exchanged samples. The central goal of this work is to develop a generic understanding of the sol-gel process through the study in detail of specific systems, and to transfer this information directly to sol-gel researchers (who may not have access to, or be experts in, the advanced techniques used). This will be achieved by correlating results with readily accessible techniques (e.g. IR and vis-UV spectroscopies). This project will concentrate on Ti02 - Si02 gels that have existing technological uses. Also some fundamental questions such as the structural role of titanium dissolving into silica will be examined. This work will be extended to examine at the atomic / mesoscopic scales structural features associated with catalytic activity in these systems.
