The overall aim of the project is to combine the good solubilisation characteristics of block copolymers of ethylene oxide and styrene oxide for aromatic drugs with favourable copolymer composition for cold gelation (i.e. gelation on heating), so gaining a system suitable for controlled release applications. The copolymers will be synthesised by sequential oxyanionic polymerisation, and will include diblock (es) and the two tri-block (ese, ses) architectures. Molecular characterisation will be by NMR spectroscopy (for absolute molar mass) and GPC (for chain length distribution). Critical micelle conditions (e.g. by surface tensimetry, dye solubilisation and eluent GPC) and micelle conditions (e.g. b dynamic and static light scattering) will be determined. Sol-gel phase diagrams will be determined, together with gel modulus to confirm hard-gel properties. Micellar solutions of all copolymers will be tested for solubilisation over a range of drugs and drug analogues. Those copolymers with compositions, chain lengths and architectures which meet the dual criterion of good solubilisation and satisfactory cold gelation will be tested (in vitro) for release characteristics.
