Summary on Grant Application Form
The present project is directed at designing, fabricating and characterising intersubband semiconductor optical sources operating in the near-infra-red. A strong characteristic of the planned work will be a close interaction between design and fabrication effort. The project will build on previous theoretical work at Bangor which has provided the conceptual basis and an applications context for studying intersubband devices operative at short wavelength. Extensive experience on growth and fabrication of semiconductor electronic and optoelectronic devices at UMIST offers the opportunity for realising the potential of such devices. The presently proposed collaboration is thus directed at advancing concepts to achieve a practical demonstration of the capabilities of intersubband optoelectronic devices. The work will focus on specific targets which will be reached via a strong interaction between design and fabrication. Optimisation of device design will be enabled by advanced device characterisation including multiwave mixing, ellipsometry and SNOM analysis of device properties.
