Cross-linked copolymer resins in the size range 10-1000 micrometeres are useful in a wide range of applications. However, synthesis by inverse suspension polymerisation requires large volumes of organic solvents and typically leads to particles with broad size distributions. We seek to produce cross-linked polymer beads by sedimentation polymerisation in supercritical carbon dioxide. Our aim is to produce materials with unprecedented control over particle size and particle size distribution. Moreover, our new method will use no organic solvents or surfactants, thus reducing environmental burdens. The sedimentation polymerisation approach will be used for the synthesis of polymers for a variety of potential applications including chromatographic separations, controlled release, and microencapsulation. In addition to superior particle size control, key advantages to this new approach include elimination of solvent and surfactant residues, ease of product purification, and fine control over internal bead morphology.
